About

As one of many chapters governed by the Habitat for Humanity Southern AB Affiliate, our Foothills Chapter builds Habitat homes in High River, Okotoks, Turner Valley, Black Diamond and the Foothills County. Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit organization that builds strength, stability and independence for families through affordable home ownership. We build homes through community support and sell these homes to families through no down payment, no interest mortgages, giving them the financial stability and flexibility to make positive forward-looking choices. Many parents are working hard to provide for their children but they don't have the financial capacity to save for a down payment and qualify for a traditional mortgage. Because of this families are forced to rent and move often, which in turn causes instability for children, thereby impacting early childhood development. Since 1990, Habitat for Humanity Southern Alberta has partnered with more than 300 families across southern Alberta, affecting the lives of nearly 1,000 children. The Foothills Chapter is entirely run with volunteers who locally fundraise in order to purchase land and construction materials for each build project. Each duplex build project requires fundraising in excess of $300,000. As homes are built and sold to partner families, the mortgage payments are invested in the Habitat build fund to enable future build projects.

UN Sustainable Development Goals

  • No poverty

Canadian families are facing an escalating affordable housing crisis. One in five Canadians spends more than half their income on housing costs alone. Many families are employed and working hard to provide for their children, but are facing significant struggles, such as high rents, accessibility needs, or being forced to move multiple times each year. Affordable homeownership is the key to building stability for working families and has a direct impact on children's health and development. When parents spend more than 40% of their monthly income on housing, it means they don't have enough money left over to buy healthy meals for their children, invest in formative experiences like sports or music, or save for their children's education. And sometimes, they're forced to make the unthinkable choice between paying rent and buying food. Saving for a down payment is simply out of the question. Qualified families can buy a Habitat for Humanity home of their own with no down payment, no interest, and monthly payments guaranteed to be no more than 25% of their monthly income.
