UN Sustainable Development Goals

  • Quality education

The Siminovitch Prize promotes learning in two ways, mentorship and self-directed learning. Through the protégé component of the prize, an emerging artist is is given 25,000 dollars, a week-long residency at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity, and quarterly calls with their mentor. The Siminovitch Prize also provides a mid-career artist the time and means to expand their knowledge of their artform through research, skill development, and practice.

  • Decent work and economic growth

The Siminovitch Prize is one of the leading catalysts for theatrical innovation in Canada. The 120,000 dollar annual award supports one exceptional mid-career artist, one emerging artist, and four short-listed finalists with the public recognition and financial support necessary to deepen their artistic practice and take greater creative risks with their work. By providing theatre artists with a significant financial boon, the Siminovitch Prize generates opportunity for new work and growth in the sector.

  • Industry, innovation and infrastructure

The Siminovitch Prize is one of the largest drivers of theatrical innovation in Canada. As the country's top honour in theatre, the Siminovitch Prize rewards artists who display excellence in their field and push the boundaries of what it means to create Canadian art. The investment in their work propels them to further innovation. As a result, the innovation we see on stages across Canada today is due in part, to the investment of the Siminovitch Prize for the past two decades.

  • Sustainable cities and communities

The Siminovitch Prize not only stimulates innovation in Canadian theatre, but also serves as a place for like-minded artists to meet, connect, and grow together. Through the mentorship program and through the growing community of Laureates, Finalists, and Protégés, the Siminovitch Prize acts as a hub of connection for theatre artists across the country. In 2021, a free virtual discussion series called the Siminovitch Forum was launched, as national gathering place for theatre makers and theatre audiences. Since the inception of the Siminovitch Forum, six meaningful gatherings have taken place connecting theatre communities across the country to discuss topics like identity and storytelling, feminist theatre, and innovation.
