About

The Jane Goodall Institute promotes understanding and protection of endangered Great Apes and their habitat and builds on the legacy of Dr. Jane Goodall, our founder, to empower local people to care for their natural resources and equip young people to take the lead in becoming agents of community change.

Our Programs:

The Jane Goodall Institute protects wild chimpanzees and other primates through the Tchimpounga Chimpanzee Rehabilitation Center, the largest sanctuary in Africa for primates rescued from wildlife traffickers. We also support law enforcement efforts to reduce illegal trafficking.

At the Jane Goodall Institute Tchimpounga Sanctuary:
• 140 chimpanzees are housed and cared for
• 70+ billboards have been placed in surrounding communities discouraging people from poaching great apes
• Nearly 100 Tchimpounga chimps live on three islands that are part of the sanctuary where the habitat is most like living in the wild

The Institute additionally protects important landscapes and endangered species through community-led conservation strategies that address local priority needs. By engaging communities, villagers benefit from conservation efforts and are less dependent on forest resources.

Through our Delivering Healthy Futures Project in the DRC, which was completed in 2020:
• 1,511 pregnant women have benefitted from access to prenatal care and have been sensitized on safe pregnancy, delivery and motherhood
• 12,859 infants have been vaccinated against diphtheria, whooping cough, measles, polio, tuberculosis, and tetanus
• 635 health care workers have received training on maternal health care
• 65% of women in the places where we work now receive prenatal care, up
from 15% when the project began
In Canada, Jane Goodall’s Roots & Shoots is our youth-led community action and learning program. Through experiential learning that promotes leadership skills, critical thinking and compassion, Roots & Shoots encourages young people to make a meaningful difference in their neighbourhoods and beyond.

Through our 2020 Roots & Shoots Program
• 1,036 young people across Canada led community action projects
• 5,496 youth were directly and indirectly reached either through a project or school-wide participation in Roots & Shoots initiatives (I don't think the 2018 number (46,661) is correct...)
• 10,585 community members directly and indirectly benefited from community projects
• 8 Uncovering Common Ground Projects led directly by 23 youth, with 7 formal partnerships that including both Indigenous-led and non-Indigenous led organizations (indirect numbers not yet available) - feel free to adjust the wording of this sentence as you need.

Your generous donation will allow JGI Canada to off-set administrative costs for necessary national and international travel so that a greater portion of our funds raised can go directly to JGI programs.

Thank you for your support!
