Sound is as important to whales as vision is to humans.

Most of our research on ocean noise identifies problem areas:  places where marine wildlife are exposed to high levels of noise.  Our latest work identifies "opportunity sites" -- places with many animals, but where noise levels are still low.  It will be easier to keep quiet areas quiet than to make noisy areas quieter.  We need to do both, but our latest research identifies where accidents of geography allow us to protect important marine habitats by maintaining the status quo.

It's a simple idea, but it is resonating with managers and ocean enthusiasts.  The work has been profiled in many news agencies, most recently on BBC World News radio's Newshour program.
