About

For the last 15 years, TSA - Music for the Future has organized music workshops for Inuit youth in Nunavut. Our instructors have worked in 9 communities putting instruments in the hands of youth, and that is powerful. The workshops and addition of weekly virtual lessons show students that hard work and dedication can pay off, an experience that increases self-confidence for many, as well as increase self-esteem, teamwork and leadership skills, while promoting a healthy and positive lifestyle. Through organized music workshops and the weekly virtual lessons, exposure to professional musicians, and opportunities for cultural sharing and mentoring, youth have been learning valuable skills and given a positive outlet with which to express themselves, which has had a positive effect on their mental health. The interest in the music workshops & virtual programming continues to grow and has added to the inspiration to ensure this program grows and prospers.

UN Sustainable Development Goals

  • Good health and well-being

TSA - Music for the Future provides opportunities for youth to learn and play music which has been shown to improve mental health. In the World Health Organization’s report Preventing Suicide (2014), promoting mental health falls under one of three suicide prevention strategies. Participation in the arts has been known to have a positive effect on mental health, including a decrease in depressive symptoms, increase in positive emotions, and reduction in stress responses. Our workshops and having the outlet of music provides an option for self-care, connects students with other youth, improves their self-expression and self-esteem and can introduce them to potential career paths, which leads to hope for the future.
