About
When is a tree more than just a tree? It’s when the tree is part of a memorial to honour Canada’s fallen heroes. The Highway of Heroes Tree Campaign is planting 2 million trees along the 401 Highway of Heroes as a tribute to the men and women who fought for Canada in our wars, and a living memorial to the 117,000 who died for freedom. You can participate in honouring our military, protecting the environment and beautifying North America’s most travelled highway.
We will use points donated for fundraising purposes and to help involve family members of fallen soldiers at our ceremonial plantings.

UN Sustainable Development Goals
-
Good health and well-being
We are planting 2 million trees for all Canadians that have served during times of conflict since Confederation and including the war of 1812. These trees will sequester 3,067,200 tonnes of carbon over the next 100 years; produce 520,000,000 lbs of oxygen annually; and provide a form of therapy to those coping with PTSD.
-
Clean water and sanitation
Green spaces along highways have several infrastructural and safety benefits. Trees help to prevent water pollution by filtering the water that runs down its trunk through the soil below before running into streams and oceans.
-
Industry, innovation and infrastructure
Green spaces along highways have several infrastructural and safety benefits, including natural wind and snow breaks; storm water adsorption; soil stabilization; and erosion prevention. Studies have even shown that trees reduce traffic speeds.
-
Climate action
Our campaign enhances the natural environment and makes a lasting impact for generations to come. Trees help to sequester 3,067,200 tonnes of carbon over the next 100 years; produce 520,000,000 lbs of oxygen annually; increase wildlife habit; positively impact the pollinator populations; and aid in storm water adsorption, soil stabilization, erosion prevention.

Peace, justice and strong institutions
We are planting 2 million trees for all Canadians that have served during times of conflict since Confederation and including the war of 1812. 117,000 of the most prominent trees will be planted along and near the stretch of the 401 known as the Highway of Heroes, one tree for every life lost while serving in the Canadian Armed Forces. This will be the largest living tribute to service men and women in the world.
