About

LEADER is a student-driven overseas economic development program. It was founded in 1991 by MBA students from the Richard Ivey School of Business at the University of Western Ontario. Its mandate is to empower entrepreneurs in emerging economies to grow and scale their businesses. Currently, LEADER operates in Whitehorse, Canada; Sarajevo, Bosnia & Herzegovina; Belgrade, Serbia; Skopje, North Macedonia; Bangalore, India; Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam and Kathmandu, Nepal. LEADER's Whitehorse site specifically aims to support First Nations entrepreneurs.

Each year, LEADER sends a team of Ivey students to a number of sites, where they teach foundational business decision making and entrepreneurial skills. Volunteer instructors include undergraduate, MBA, and PhD students. This rich exchange lasts two weeks and benefits the overseas students as well as volunteer instructors.

Since its inception, LEADER has taught over 8,500 of students in developing economies around the world. Many of our students have gone on to grow successful businesses in sustainability, media & telecom, and consumer packaged goods.

UN Sustainable Development Goals

  • Quality education

LEADER's program is based on the world-renowned Ivey Business School case method, where contribution and real-life decision making are encouraged. The two-week MBA-style course provides entrepreneurs in emerging economics insight into a unique style of business education that is rarely present in their regions.

  • Gender equality

With 53% of LEADER students and entrepreneurs in 2019 being female, LEADER empowers women around the world to launch and grow businesses, improving their economic position in their communities. Women are able to find a like-minded network of industry peers and get equally connected to opportunities within their local business ecosystems.

  • Decent work and economic growth

LEADER's program empowers entrepreneurs to launch and scale their businesses. These businesses frequently employ local workers, further advancing the economic impact within their region.
